A visitor sees the finished experience: the welcome, the meal, the journey, the place they will remember. Behind it are people who have spent months planning, hiring, maintaining equipment and building a business around an idea.
On World Tourism Day, there is much to celebrate in Yukon tourism. The Yukon Tourism Indicators Dashboard shows encouraging activity across the industry. Behind those indicators are businesses and workers creating experiences, careers and opportunities in communities throughout the territory.
This year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” looks ahead to changes already underway. AI is influencing how people discover destinations and plan travel. For businesses, digital tools may make it easier to reach customers, respond to questions or manage the work behind an experience.
The possibilities are worth exploring. The more useful question for a Yukon business may be: what would we want these tools to make possible?
Perhaps it is more time to spend with guests. Perhaps it is a way to reach visitors outside the busiest months, or to make a task that takes hours each week a little easier. The answer will differ from one operator to another.
Technology also sits alongside the everyday conditions that shape what a business can do. Finding staff, managing costs, arranging transportation and making plans across long distances all affect whether an idea can succeed. A new tool is most valuable when it helps with a real challenge and a business has the capacity to put it to work.
The future we want for Yukon tourism is one where businesses can build on the opportunities in front of them, people can make careers in the industry, and communities benefit from the activity tourism brings. Technology can help shape that future. So will the knowledge, judgment and ambition of the people who know this place.
On World Tourism Day, we celebrate the people behind Yukon tourism. As new technology changes the industry, the goal is to make their work easier, their businesses stronger and the opportunities they create more lasting—for them and for the communities they call home.
