TIA Yukon is looking to hear from tourism businesses and organizations about their experiences with permitting and approval processes for development projects.
We have heard from some in the industry that projects are taking longer than expected to move through permitting or other approvals — and, in some cases, that projects have been changed, delayed significantly or ultimately not proceeded.
We don’t yet know how widespread these experiences are, where in the development and approval process challenges may be occurring, or what factors are contributing to them. Before determining whether there is a broader issue requiring advocacy, we want to build a clearer picture based on actual industry experiences across the territory.
If you have undertaken or considered a tourism development project that experienced challenges related to permits or approvals, we would like to hear from you.
In particular, it would be helpful to understand:
- What you were trying to develop
- What permits or approvals were required and from which authority
- How long the process took or has been taking
- Whether the process affected project costs, funding timelines, construction or opening dates
- Whether the project was delayed, changed or ultimately did not proceed
- What, in your experience, could have made the process work better
Public and private investment is being made to support new tourism infrastructure, experiences and businesses across the Yukon. We want to better understand whether there are unintended barriers within development and approval processes that are making it more difficult to turn that investment into completed projects.
The information we receive will help TIA Yukon determine whether there are common or systemic challenges that should be raised with governments and other partners — and, if so, where improvements may be possible.
