Reminder: Class 4 Road Test Pilot Available to Yukon Tourism Operators

Tourism operators are reminded of an existing Class 4 road test pilot designed to help streamline the licensing process for drivers working in the Yukon’s tourism industry.

The pilot has been in effect since October 2024 and provides options to help eligible tourism operators and their drivers navigate the Class 4 licensing process more efficiently, while maintaining existing road safety and testing standards.

Under the pilot, drivers who successfully complete the Class 4 knowledge test and are booking a Class 5 road test may request to combine their Class 5 and Class 4 road tests into a single examination. The pilot document notes that this can eliminate the average eight-week waiting period between the two road tests.

For drivers who already hold a Class 5 licence, the pilot also allows their Class 4 road test to be expedited where practicable and reasonable. Expedited scheduling depends on appointment availability, is not guaranteed and is available once per driver.

Who is eligible?

The pilot applies specifically to drivers working for Yukon tourism operators who require a Class 4 driver’s licence. For the purposes of the pilot, an eligible tourism operator must be a Yukon-based business operating a passenger vehicle with 12 or more seats and transporting passengers as part of tourism operations, including leisure, sport, arts and events, accommodations, and MICE or exhibitions.

Operators and drivers remain responsible for meeting all licensing requirements and arriving prepared for the applicable road test. If a driver is unsuccessful, subsequent tests are subject to regular booking processes and wait times.

Planning for Class 4 licensing? Make sure you know about the pilot

For tourism businesses that rely on Class 4 drivers, particularly when recruiting and preparing seasonal employees, this pilot may provide a useful option for reducing delays in the licensing process.

Operators wishing to use the pilot must notify the Senior Driver Examiner when requesting a combined test after the driver’s Class 5 road test has been scheduled. Operators must also advise the Senior Driver Examiner once the driver has successfully completed the Class 4 knowledge test so that road-test scheduling can be coordinated.

The pilot remains subject to appointment availability and may be modified or terminated by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.

Operators are encouraged to review the full pilot document below for eligibility, requirements, booking procedures and responsibilities.
